From teaching at Loreto Convent in Sydney, went on to University of Western Australia as Associate Professor - later Professor of Australian Literature ... an active champion of Australian writing, she also joined many progressive causes including Aboriginal rights, anti-uranium mining lobby, and publicly attacked the Vatican position on gay rights, abortion, church resistance to ordination of women
